What Purification Capacity means in Water Purifiers?

When we talk about water purifiers feature we discuss things like filtration technique used, materials and size, storage tank capacity and average life of the filters. But one feature that is often overlooked or not understood by the general buyer is purification capacity. In today’s post, we will be summarizing RO purifier features and explain purification capacity of a water purifier.

Most modern homes are using RO water purifiers these days. RO water purifiers can have up to 8-stage water filtration, offering total protection from waterborne pollutants. As a general comparison of RO technology shows here, RO purifiers can remove over 99 per cent of the dissolved solids, chemical compounds, germs and hard water elements. When paired with Ultra Violet treatment, these purifiers become even more effective against bacteria and viruses.

Since, the reverse osmosis process, that makes these water purifiers so effective, requires electricity, RO purifier units generally have a storage tank. The capacity of this tank can vary from 5 to 10 litres. Now, most people may easily confuse purification capacity with storage capacity but that is not the case.

Purification Capacity of an RO Water Purifiers

Basically, the RO purifier requires time to run the raw water through various filters and collect it in the storage tank. This time and the water that has been purified within it are the parameters used for calculating purification capacity of a water purifier.

In simple terms, purification capacity means the amount of water that an RO filter can purify in one hour. It is calculated in litres per hour. A kitchen water purifier will have a purification capacity between 12 to 15 litres/hour. Purification capacity is used to calculate the Maximum Duty Cycle of an RO water purifier, which is the amount of water that can be purified daily. So, if you have an RO water purifier with 7-litre storage tank and purification capacity of 12 litres/hour, the Maximum Duty Cycle will come to about 75 litres/day.

So, in essence, purification capacity of a water purifier will begin to go down when the RO membrane and other filters get older. That is why, brands recommend timely service and replacement of water purifiers.
