What is a bamboo fabric?

How is a bamboo fabric made? 

Bamboo fabrics are manufactured in the industries using two methods: 

1. Crushing and mashing technique

In this process, the bamboo plant is crushed into a pulp with natural enzymes and the fibers are then combed and cut into yarns. This process is laborious and time-consuming, and hence expensive. However, this is a more sustainable option for manufacturing bamboo fabric.

2. Boiling technique 

The boiling technique involves mixing the plant material with chemicals that are heated to produce a concoction. The treated bamboo fibers are then cut into yarns and used to produce fabric. This process is wasteful and harmful to the environment. 

Use of bamboo fabric 

The fabric made out of bamboo can be practically used anywhere as a replacement for cotton fabric. Bamboo fabric is preferred more as it is eco-friendly and has a number of other benefits. 

1. It can be or household textile 

- Sheets, mattress cover, blankets, towels, etc.

2. It can be used for garments

- T-shirt, shirt, socks, etc

3. It can be used for intimate garments/products 

- Undergarments, sanitary pads, etc
